West Ham have been one of the summer’s big spenders and have struck a loan agreement with an option for Nice defender Todibo
West Ham United are close to winning the race to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice amid strong competition from Juventus, with the France defender set for a medical in London on Friday.
West Ham had last month moved into a strong position in the pursuit of Todibo but there were concerns that the 24-year-old had his heart set on a transfer to Italy instead.
Hopes of a deal have now been revived in east London, although Juventus are believed to remain in the picture. An agreement between Nice and West Ham has been struck for a loan move with the option of a £34 million permanent transfer.
West Ham’s push to sign Todibo comes as defender Kurt Zouma, the club captain, closes in on a move to the United Arab Emirates.
Earlier this year Todibo had been of interest to Manchester United but, as Nice are owned by Ineos, any possible move to Old Trafford would not have been possible because of multi-club ownership rules.
It has been another busy summer at the London Stadium, with West Ham so far investing more than £100 million in signings for new head coach Julen Lopetegui. Technical director Tim Steidten, who had experienced tension with previous manager David Moyes, has been among the most active deal-makers in the Premier League.
If a deal for Todibo can at last be finalised, he would be the second centre-back to join the club this summer after Max Kilman arrived from Wolves for £40 million.
West Ham also paid around £27 million to sign striker Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund and £25 million to take winger Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United.
They have also spent around £25 million on teenage winger Luis Guilherme, who has joined from Brazilian side Palmeiras, and signed Argentina international midfielder Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer.
On the outgoing side, West Ham have generated around £40 million through the sales of Flynn Downes to Southampton, Said Benrahma to Lyon and Thilo Kehrer to Monaco.
